In a male-dominated world, two women find their way and achieve professional success. In Señorita y Madame: The Secret War of Elizabeth Arden & Helena Rubinstein, a nurse diminished by her brothers and a Jewish peasant show us how their rivalry led to the creation of the beauty industry and “marketing” in the 20th century, as they fought for women’s rights.
This innovative play about the antagonism between Arden and Rubinstein brings together five Venezuelan artists at GALA Theatre: Gustavo Ott, the playwright; Consuelo Trum, the director; Ana Verónica Muñoz, who plays Helena Rubinstein; and actors Carlos Castillo and Manuex.
Also acting in the production are GALA company members Luz Nicolás, who plays Elizabeth Arden and appeared in Yerma; Argentine Cecilia De Feo, who last performed in Puro Tango II; Peruvian Lorena Sabogal, last seen in Living Out; and Cuban-American Thais Menéndez, who appeared in GALita’s Nuevas aventuras de Don Quijote this season.
With biting humor, Ott explores hatred and admiration through the rivalry between the two giants of beauty and business. Against the vibrant historical backdrop of the zenith of industrialization, the rise of Fascism, The Great Depression, two World Wars and the invention of advertising, both became pioneers in marketing and influenced how women saw and presented themselves. Both rose from humble beginnings, and battled society and each other to become two of the wealthiest and most influential women in the world. They fought for gender equality and against racism and sexism, even before women could vote.

En un mundo dominado por los hombres, dos mujeres se abren paso y alcanzan el éxito profesional, más allá de cualquier canon preexistente. En la obra “Señorita y Madame: La guerra secreta de Elizabeth Arden & Helena Rubinstein”, una enfermera apabullada por sus hermanos y una campesina judía nos muestran cómo su rivalidad las llevó a crear la industria de la belleza y el mercadeo en el siglo XX, al tiempo de luchar por los derechos de la mujer.
Esta innovadora obra sobre el antagonismo entre Arden y Rubinstein reúne a cinco artistas venezolanos en el Teatro GALA: el escritor Gustavo Ott; la directora Consuelo Trum; la actriz que encarna a Helena Rubinstein, Ana Verónica Muñoz; y los actores Carlos Castillo y Manuex.
Los acompañan las actrices de la compañía Luz Nicolás, quien interpreta a Elizabeth Arden y participó en la obra “Yerma”; la argentina Cecilia De Feo, cuya última aparición en GALA fue en “Puro Tango II”; la peruana Lorena Sabogal, quien actuó en Living Out; y la cubano-americana Thais Menéndez, quien fue parte del elenco en la obra de GALita “Nuevas aventuras de Don Quijote”.
Con humor punzante, Ott explora la relación entre el odio y la admiración a través de la rivalidad entre dos gigantes de la belleza y los negocios. En el vibrante marco histórico del apogeo de la industrialización, el surgimiento del fascismo, la Gran Depresión, dos Guerras Mundiales y la invención de la publicidad, ambas mujeres fueron pioneras en la técnica de mercadeo e influenciaron la manera en que la mujer se veía y presentaba a sí misma. Las dos tuvieron inicios humildes, al tiempo que lucharon contra la sociedad y entre ellas para convertirse en dos de las mujeres más acaudaladas e influyentes en el mundo. Ellas batallaron en favor de la igualdad de género, y contra el racismo y el sexismo, incluso antes del establecimiento del voto femenino.
