SerendibDance Presents a Rich Sensory Delight Steeped in Culture and Tradition

In celebration of Sri Lanka’s diverse heritage, Asanga Domask brings her company SerendibDance to Dance Place for a performance of A Single Cycle of the Sun. Through a combination of intricate movements, rich instrumentals and exquisite and elaborate costumes, SerendibDance takes their audience into an ancient world filled with traditions and rich in culture. Traditional folk dance takes center stage as the work chronicles the life of a village from sunrise to sunset, illuminating the beauty that stems from community interactions and everyday activities. Witness this vivid performance on Saturday, November 22 at 8pm and Sunday, November 23 at 4pm at Dance Place.

About SerendibDance
SerendibDance is a Sri Lankan Traditional and Folk dance company based in Washington, DC. Their mission is to serve a fundamental role in preserving the sacred and endangered art of traditional Sri Lankan dance through training, education and performance. Their performances celebrate an art form built upon thousands of years of tradition with deep roots in everyday village life, Buddhist religious customs and ceremonial celebrations for the island’s royalty. These performances give audience members the opportunity to view an authentic, non-commercialized version of this graceful dance form. Elaborate costumes, traditional music and powerful yet elegant movements will engage spectators of all ages and interests.

About Asanga Domask
Asanga Domask is an educator, performer, choreographer and arts administrator, as well as the Founder and Artistic Director of SerendibDance. She grew up in Sri Lanka where she devoted most of her childhood to the art of traditional Sri Lankan dance, studying under prominent dance masters including Nandana Balasuriya, Gyana Magammana and Chitrasena and Vajira Dias. After coming to the United States, she received her BA in Economics from Mary Baldwin College, worked at the World Wildlife Fund and later earned her MFA in Dance from American University with a thesis focused on Sri Lankan traditional dance preservation. Asanga has presented her work extensively at local and international venues, including the Millennium Stage at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, VelocityDC Dance Festival, Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, the U.S. State Department and Sri Lankan Embassy events. Asanga is a 2014 Artist-in-Residence at CityDance and is a recipient of many prestigious awards; including an Individual Artist & Scholars Award from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County and the 2014 Individual Artist Award in Dance: Choreography from the Maryland State Arts Council.
